Nueces County Water and Sewer Approves Water Tank Mural On Mustang Island State Park

Nueces County Water and Sewer Approves Water Tank Mural On Mustang Island State Park Corpus Christi Texas

A beautiful mural will help convert a Mustang Island water tank into an innovative 3D work of art.

Mustang Island State Park will soon have a new landmark. The Nueces County Water and Sewer department has approved the painting of a mural on the 30ft water tank located on Hwy 361.

For some time now, Nueces County officials have been trying to come up with a solution to the tank's interference with the park's natural scenery. Concerned about preserving the island's natural appearance for future generations, they came up with several ideas of how to deal with the tank's aesthetic.

At one point they thought burying it and creating a 30ft sand dune would be an option, but high costs and maintenance issues have curtailed this solution.

Finally, Nueces County has given the go ahead to paint a mural on the tank. Work will begin in September 2008. Nueces County will provide for the base painting of the tank, and the artwork will be funded by a private donation from the owners of Island Park Estates.

Innovative 3D imagery software was used to render the artwork chosen to be painted on the 30 ft tall blank canvas. This new work of art will be a natural island dune scene faded at the top to a blue skyline blended into white which will make the tank appear part of the natural scenery of Mustang Island.

In this way, the Park's tank will transform from a large structure that stands-out from the natural environment - to a landmark.

RAZ, a well-known Galveston artist, has been chosen to paint the mural. His twenty years of experience working with several mediums designing billboards, murals and sculptures will be useful when painting this large scale work of art.

The idea of painting water tanks is not a new one. Some communities have chosen to paint the city's name (or the name of a local hero) on their water tanks.

Research now shows that local residents prefer to have the tanks blend into the natural scenery, and that it increases near-by property values.

Communities in the state of Washington for example have already painted several tanks that have gracefully blended with their environment.

The picture to the right demonstrates the way the murals are not only a work of art but serve to disguise the otherwise unsightly water tank.

The tanks become local attractions in their own right. Both property owners and visitors will appreciate the work of art along with the views of the natural surroundings.

Island Park Estates and the Nueces County Water and sewer department have been working for several months to make the project happen.

The project is being completed as part of the ongoing maintenance efforts of the water and sewer department.
